Famous Couples’ Wedding Invitation Challenge: You’ve Got Mail’s Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox

Why I chose this couple? I’m a big fan of both Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, so naturally I love this film. I thought it would be fun to create a 90s technology meets classic invitation suite. I decided that Kathleen and Joe would elope, but wanted friends to gather at a later date to celebrate. Guests would get a floppy disk with images from their private wedding ceremony, and the disk label would act as the invitation for the celebration.

Describe the suite in a little detail: I decided to make the event timing October, inspired by a line in the movie: “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” The reception location is the spot in the park at the end of the movie, and I chose the green found on the exterior of Kathleen’s store, The Shop Around the Corner, to add to the black and white palette.

Some words to describe my custom stationery suite: Simple, clean, modern, yet retro 90s.

My biggest challenge: How to bring email/90s technology into the set without making it an evite, and maintaining their classic aesthetic and love of books.

Detail callouts: Note the play on the movie’s title for the copy found on the envelope and the disk label.

Wedding party mentions: They eloped, so for the ceremony only their dog Brinkley and the officiant were present. Julia Roberts as the officiant because she and Tom are BFFs, so why not, right?
